Getting email from junk folder on Ms Outlook (POP3)

As POP3 only download mails from the Inbox folder, you may miss some legitimate emails that have gone into the Junk folder.

AfterOffice offers an alternate way to download emails from your Junk mailbox, which is by creating a new profile with an added “-Junk” suffix to your login email, for example, david-Junk@somedomain.com.

Please follow the below steps for setting up Junk folder for POP3 on Ms Outlook:

1. Open your Microsoft Outlook and go to [File]. Click the Account Settings drop-down and select [Manage Profiles].

2. Then, select [Yes] from the User Account Control prompt.

3. Select [Email Accounts].

4. Click on [New] to create a new email account.

5. Select [Manual setup or additional server types] and click on [Next].

6. Choose the [POP or IMAP] option. Then, [Next].

7. Fill in your POP3 account setting details. Make sure to include ‘-Junk’ after your name in the email address. For example, first-Junk@atikahg1.vo.com.my where first is the original username for this email address.

Please make sure to untick the [Automatically test account settings when Next is clicked] under Test Account Settings.

Then, click on [More Settings…]

8. Go to [Outgoing Server] tab. Tick the [My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication] and select [Use same settings as my incoming mail server].

9. Proceed to the [Advanced] tab. You may choose to use either None, STARTTLS or SSL/TLS Encryption by filling in either of the following details:

(i) None/STARTTLS Encryption

Incoming server (POP3) 110
This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS) No ( )
Outgoing server (SMTP) 587
Use the following type of encrypted connection None or STARTTLS
Leave a copy of messages on the server Yes (/)

* You can choose how long to leave your email in the server by changing the days, or to remove it from the server if the email is deleted from ‘Trash’ or ‘Deleted Items’.

(ii) SSL/TLS Encryption

Incoming server (POP3) 995
This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS) Yes (/)
Outgoing server (SMTP) 465
Use the following type of encrypted connection SSL/TLS
Leave a copy of messages on the server Yes (/)

* You can choose how long to leave your email in the server by changing the days, or to remove it from the server if the email is deleted from ‘Trash’ or ‘Deleted Items’.

Then, you can click [OK] and select [Next] from the POP Account Setting.

10. Lastly, this screen will appear when you have successfully installed the mail account. So, you can click on [Finish].

Now, the Inbox for your mail account is containing the emails sent to your Junk mailbox instead of the default folder, Inbox.

Note that Junk mailbox name are case sensitive, and it is the only one special mailbox available under POP3 access.

Use IMAP instead of POP3 if you wish to access multiple mailboxes with mail client.
