faq:email:why_is_recipient_email_used_as_from_for_forwarded_and_redirected_mails

This is an old revision of the document!

Why is recipient's email being used as the from address for forwarded and redirected mails?

In order to maintain good reputation for your email and domain, we have recently performed an update, which is to use the recipient address (instead of the original sender address) as the “From” address, when an email redirect/bcc forwarding takes place.

For example, jane@mydomain.com is set to redirect mails to peter@mydomain.com. When amy@otherdomain.com sends an email to jane@mydomain.com, Peter will receive a copy of the email. In this case, Peter will see Amy's identity in the name field, but the “From” email is jane@mydomain.com instead of amy@otherdomain.com.

This update is required due to the fact that if the original sender address is used as the “From” address when forwarding emails, these emails would most likely be regarded as spoof mails (emails that were sent out using a different identity) at the final/forwarded recipient's mail server, and would be rejected and blacklisted. Your mail server/domain reputation would then be affected, which would result in other recipients rejecting and blocking your emails.

Therefore, we have enhanced this function to forward the mail as the actual recipient. While the original sender's name and email are still appended in the “Name” field, the final recipient will still know who is the original sender.
